Since most of the action is concentrated on the controller held in the player’s hand, it is easy to overlook the fact that the movement of each finger and wrist is almost entirely dependent on the display on the monitor. If the display screen skips or freezes at important moments, or is blurred to make precise aiming impossible, the player may quickly exit the game.

For gamers, there are four important standard monitor specifications while playing online games.

Display resolution: Although the game can be played on a standard HD monitor (729p), most gamers at least require full HD (1080p) in terms of aiming and clarity. Generally, game players require a response time of 5ms or less. There are a few models have a response time as low as 1ms. However, they are expensive.

Connection options: Unless you buy a PC or game box and a new monitor at the same time, you will need to select a connection option for the game monitor that matches the current system output. There are two different kind of monitor performance issues that bother players, we will explain as below.

Stuttering: This happens whenever the generation of a new frame is interrupted by slow rendering (or some other processing issue), but the monitor will keep refreshing at its standard rate. This can cause frames to be skipped or appear to be repeated.

Tearing: When a part of two or more frames is displayed in one frame. Sometimes, when the performance of frames per second is lower than the standard 60 FPS required for smooth motion on the screen, tearing can be caused.

In conclusion, as the display refresh rate increases, knots and tears will decrease. However, even with the fast refresh model, the problem still persists. Therefore, manufacturers such as Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync have designed adaptive synchronization solutions. Fundamentally, these technologies force the display to adjust settings (such as dynamic refresh rate) to meet GPU performance instead of refreshing the standard rate and may cause visual disruption. However, please note that G-Sync and FreeSync are specific to the manufacturer’s GPU, so if you need to match your new monitor with your current PC, make sure to choose the synchronization technology that matches the currently used Nvidia or AMD GPU.
